The Australian Coffee Capsule Market
Coffee capsules are great: quick, convenient, and great quality coffee in a little pod.
As a nation, Australia’s love of coffee is on the rise and coffee capsules offer a convenient solution when it comes to taste and convenience. A massive 3 million of them are consumed every day in the Australia alone. But the majority are made from plastic and aluminium, taking over 500 years to decompose, presenting a huge environmental problem.
According to research by AMI Consulting, the entire Asia-Pacific coffee capsule market, which includes Australia, is valued at an enormous $2.646bn! It is the market with the highest growth rate of 10.6% per year. That means it will be reaching $5.92bn in value by 2025! That is a lot of coffee capsules.
So that can mean great news for Australian coffee, but bad news for the environment if we continue to use coffee capsules made from hydrocarbon plastics and aluminium.
So what can we do?
It definitely helps to pick up habits like recycling, reusing, and reducing our plastic waste. But despite efforts to encourage people to recycle coffee capsules, more than 70 per cent of them never actually get recycled, even if people know they can be.
We certainly don't want to deny people's little luxuries, like a great cup of coffee. So being more aware of what the products we buy are made from definitely helps. Once we find out where the ingredients are from and what materials are used, we can make more conscious decisions. This is what we try to help people do with our coffee capsules.
